Before anyone can read and write, there are a whole lot of skills that need to be front loaded. Letter and name recognition are just 2 of them, and this simple DIY activity takes no time to make while still being really valuable.
MATERIALS:

H chose to place the letters under his name while matching them, while B placed hers on top. This is a great example of how there’s more than one way to do something using the same exact set of materials.
While playing, we identified letters, named letters, and matched letters. We also found the “first” and “last” letters in their names. Then we found the letters that were the same color.
So many skills in one activity that takes less than 10 minutes to set up. If I hadn’t thought of it on the fly, I would have laminated them because they’re something you’re going to want to save and come back to on a rainy day.
