Young children often have a difficult time differentiating between letters and numbers, so I included both here, combined with art and sensory fun. I simply used silicone letter and number molds to make regular ice cubes into educational ice cubes. 😋 The children were provided with warm water, droppers, paint brushes and washable paint (red and green here because Christmas is coming up, but any colors will do), as well as a watercolor palette with its own thinner paintbrush. 🖌
Providing paint brushes with different grips and thicknesses as well as different droppers allows children the opportunity to find a tool that will help them be successful while also exploring new options. It’s all a game to them with fine motor fun involved.
In order to make letter play purposeful, I made sure each of their trays had the first letter of their name, at minimum. When children are learning letters, it’s not uncommon for them to recognize the ones in their name first…especially the first letter.
We identified numbers and letters, sorted them, named them, and had fun with them. Children learn best through play, and after a while, I let them do just that. And when using ice, if you give it enough time, there’s sure to be an impromptu opportunity for a science 🧬 lesson. 😉
Ready, set, play!
