About Me

– My story

How micro schooling my 3-year-old came to be

My daughter’s asthmatic and had been hospitalized for respiratory issues multiple times in the 6 months prior to my entire department at the hospital being volunteered to go into the COVID positive units.  Our baby is a miracle and quite possibly the only one we’ll ever have.  I don’t feel I need to say more.  It just wasn’t worth the risk.  So although we never considered we could be a one income family, we were willing to make whatever sacrifices were necessary to keep her as safe as we could.  We put off buying a house, we sold one of the cars, and here I am.

While we were waiting for our daughter’s preschool’s opening of school plans for the fall, one of the moms in her class, whom also has a Master’s in Education and I got to talking.  With her experience, combined with my 9 years as an early childhood educator, National Board Teaching Certification, and another Masters in Speech Language Pathology with 8 years of experience with both children and adults, we figured we could probably do a better and safer job than any preschool we could send our children to.  Yes, we would miss the school community and although a traditional preschool setting would have been our first choice, a lot has changed since March with COVID-19 in the mix.

Social skills for the littles is huge, and right now, at 3, they learn best through play and socialization.  We didn’t want to sacrifice that component, so our goal was to recruit no more than 3 other families with similar views on social distancing who agreed to follow CDC guidelines (see link for our micro school’s criteria, in case it can help you develop one of your own) in order to keep our families as safe as possible. We realize it’s not as safe as keeping them home, isolated from the world, but we’re on board with taking small, calculated risks in order to find some sort of balance during these crazy times.  There is no “better way” to do things during this time.  There are just very difficult and personal decisions that each family needs to discuss and navigate in order to determine the best fit for them.  It was our choice to make margaritas out of lemons, and we don’t think we’ll ever regret it.
