PLAY-DOH MATH: FALLING LEAVES 🍂 AND CHANGING SEASONS🍁

This morning we read Sky Tree by Candace Christiansen and Thomas Locker, which has gorgeous illustrations. To bridge the gap between literacy and math, we were supposed to collect leaves from outside for our @experiencecurriculum lesson…but it was pouring rain ☔️, so I improvised.

H and I made a tree trunk, branches, and leaves 🍃 , and put them together to make an Autumn/Fall tree. We discussed how trees and their leaves change depending on the season, as well as counted our Play-Doh branches and leaves. Then out of nowhere, H said the wind 🌬 was blowing (complete with visuals and sound effects), and started picking leaves 🍃 off the tree. 🌳 We even added a hole for the squirrels 🐿 to live.

Thank you, sweet child, for allowing an informal and fun math lesson to happen today. We worked on number sequencing, one-to-one correspondence, more than, less than, and well as addition and subtraction (even though those are not the words I used). It kept us busy for a solid 20-30 minutes and was as much fun as it was educational.
