So Hurricane Eta made a wind and water appearance in South FL between Sunday and Monday, and because B was so curious as to why things had to be brought inside and preparations made, I decided to veer from our usual curriculum and do 1 full day on hurricanes. Although there were multiple Pinterest fails today π) this STEM activity was such a great cooperative learning experience and just plain fun. Older kids likely would have been able to draw out their models first, but because these guys are only 3, we talked it through and made adjustments as we went. H even decided to place Play-Doh on the side of the popsicle sticks to make the walls stronger. πͺπΌ
After the 3 of us built a house together, we placed it in a pan with water (to simulate flooding), and took it outside to see how well it would fare in front of our hurricane (AKA= the fan). It did great in a category 1, but as soon as I cranked up the fan speed to simulate a hurricane with stronger winds, our house fell apart. Best part? The kids were so excited they didnβt mind one bit.
