WIND PAINTING: A LESSON IN COMING UP WITH A PLAN B

So today we learned about “wind” to go along with this month’s weather unit. The materials and idea were simple, but it appears that the @melissaanddougtoys washable paint 🎨 we used may have been too thick. The adults in the room tried to use the straws to blow the paint, sequins, and flowers 🌸 across the paper to no avail. Finally, one of the children decided to use his straw as a 🖌 paintbrush, and soon the other joined in, starting a conversation about color mixing.

This activity DID NOT go as planned, but the products were beautiful and the children enjoyed the process. If you decide to try this at home, consider diluting the paint with a little bit of water 💧 first, and make sure your paper has more of a card stock thickness than a construction paper one. Otherwise, your paper may tear.

Adult lessons for the day: 1) Always have a plan B in mind or at least be able to think one up on a dime. 2) You don’t always have to be the one who executes a plan. Allow the children to explore and see what they come up with. Today, a child’s idea blew anything I could have come up with out of the water, and that made me proud. 3) Keep it real. None of us are perfect, just well intentioned.
