DO YOU WANT TO BUILD AN IGLOO?

If you recall from one of my recent posts, I recently bought biodegradable packing peanuts in bulk. I remind you of this so you prepare yourselves for oodles of winter themed/Arctic activities involving these little gems. This one in particular was a DIY igloo building activity paired with the book, Sweetest Kulu.

In case anyone is impressed with my 3-year-old’s building skills, don’t be. This is my igloo which B helped to make because it proved too difficult for her to do independently. My husband made 2 more with her later in the day (his were round and impressive), but he experienced the same. This was more of a parallel play activity (him building and her smooshing wet packing peanuts) until they were complete…and then the dramatic play began. 🤗

B now has 3 igloos that she’s been playing with for days. Her arctic animals seek shelter inside, her stuffed turtle has a new shell, and I still recommend you try it because it’s just as amazing for an adult to see these stick and stay together when wet, as it is for a child. Also, because all 3 igloos are different, it’s led to conversations about shapes and construction. She’s now noticing the shapes of people’s homes on our walks.

If igloo building isn’t your thing, you can #adaptmyplay by pouring these into a sensory bin to double as snow. Add some scoopers, fine motor tools, favorite toys, and you’re all set.

You can also build and number of things with these. Truly. If you can think it, you can build it. Older children might even enjoy a sculpture making competition. With extra materials, glue, markers, and scissors, I envision polar bears, Beluga whales, and even a narwhal. Who knows? 🤷🏻‍♀️ The possibilities are limitless. ✨

If you venture into the packing peanut world, do tag me. I’d love to see your creativity at work. 💕
